Somalia’s president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo has released on his twitter feed a statement announcing a political agreement for the upcoming anticipated elections of 2021.
Somali leaders have been convened in the state capital of Galmudug State, Dhuusamareeb, for the past week in trying to reach an end to a long on-going political deadlock. The meeting was attended by the state leaders of Hirshabelle, Galmudug, South West State and Benadir Regional as Jubbaland and Puntland were absent after refusing to the attend the convention.
Both state leaders of Jubbaland and Puntland accuse Federal President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo of breaking many promises and thus require international community to observe Dhuusmareeb 3 for them to attend.
It remains to be seen the response of both Jubbland and Puntland State leaders on whether agreeing to election method that was concluded on their absence.
It was only this evening when UN’s Special Representative James Swan spoke at the security council meeting in New York (link) and repeating the need for a agreement to be reached as soon as possible and urging absent leaders to attend the convention.
