The presidents of Puntland and Jubbaland, today headed to Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia, where a consultative meeting between the federal government and regional governments will open in the coming days.
The arrival of the two state presidents has led to the closure of many streets in Mogadishu, sparking public outcry.
Speaking with BenaadirTV, one commuter said ”We woke up to every major road closed and apparently due to some high level meeting take place. This is the norm of our capital, one minute its open, then next minute we are stuck with walking home” said Ali Jimcaale who lives in Abdiazziz District.
The two States presidents also deployed special security forces in Mogadishu, which could be attributed to a lack of trust between the federal government and the two regional governments.
Puntland State President Said Deni is visiting Mogadishu for the first time since being elected in 2019, but prior to that he served as a minister and member of parliament in President Hassan Sheikh’s government.
Ahmed Madobe himself has not been to Mogadishu for some time, due to a bitter feud with the federal government, which has see the arrest of his security minister, Abdirashid Janan, in Mogadishu, earlier this year.
Nevertheless, the capital will host very important forums in the next few days that will determine the future of the country.
